Building Positive Connection, One Conversation at a Time

What began as a casual gathering of mates over pool, conversation and camaraderie has grown into a meaningful community event, with Bellarine Springs celebrating its first-ever R U OK? Day.

The initiative was driven by residents Tom and Clive, who recognised the importance of encouraging open conversations about mental health, not just within the popular Blokes, Beers and Billiards group, but across the entire village community.

Social isolation can have a significant impact on the health and wellbeing of older people, affecting both mental and physical health. Initiatives like R U OK? Day play an important role in fostering connection, encouraging conversation, and reminding people that support is always available within their community.

As part of the day, residents enjoyed a sausage sizzle, learnt practical ways to “give the gift of conversation” and heard from two guest speakers who shared valuable information and personal experiences.

Jess from Barwon Health’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Local team provided an overview of the free support services available through the Greater Geelong Mental Health and Wellbeing Local.

Residents also heard from Natalie Woodfull, a local community ambassador, who spoke openly about her own mental health journey and the strategies that helped her navigate challenging times. Her honest and inspiring presentation highlighted the importance of seeking support and staying connected.

The event provided an opportunity for residents to learn more about local wellbeing services, ask questions and discover where help is available if needed. It also reinforced the strength of resident-led initiatives in creating a supportive and caring community.

A special thank you goes to Tom, Clive and the local businesses that generously sponsored the event and helped make Bellarine Springs’ inaugural R U OK? Day such a success.
